The classes are open to all adults from 18 to the over 90’s and suitable for beginners as well as intermediate students.  To maintain a high standard of tuition, our classes are kept small and are relaxed, enjoyable, fun and a great way to make new friends…….often becoming lifelong friends! By the end of the course, you will have the confidence to draw and paint in a way you didn’t dream possible.

Week 1 - 3

Pencil Drawing

Over the first 3 weeks of the course, we will cover the basic techniques of drawing which include mark making, shading, enlarging images, gridding images, perspective, body proportions and the use of shapes to create accurate representations.  This is a great way to start your learning journey as these drawing techniques are crucial to provide a solid foundation for the remainder of the course.

*Returning Students - these basic skills will be honed through a more challenging module.

Week 4 - 5

Oil Pastels

The next 2 weeks are exciting where we use vibrant coloured oil pastels and will teach you how to add depth and structure to your work with colour and texture and through layering and smudging.  With our step-by-step teaching methods, we will teach you what types of paper to use to enhance your work and enable you to build upon your drawing techniques learnt in the previous module.

*Returning Students - will be given a chance to work on a more advanced project.

Week 6 - 8

Watercolour Painting

Watercolours are a very popular medium.  In this module you will learn how to prepare your paper, mix colours and work with light and shade using this semi-transparent paint.  We will teach you various techniques such as brush strokes, ‘wet-on-wet’ as well as ‘dry-on-wet’ painting, and the use of salt and sponges.

*Returning Students - will explore this medium in greater depth with investigating different techniques.

Week 9 - 12

Acrylic Painting

Acrylic paints are a versatile medium offering vibrant colours and a flexibility of use.  For example, you can use a paint brush or use a palette knife, you can water them down and use like watercolours, or apply thick layers to create texture.  Acrylic paint is waterproof so can be used on various surfaces such as paper, wood and plaster.

*Returning Students – will have more challenging projects to work on.

Week 13

Mounting Pictures

This week we will be preparing your pictures for the exhibition.  Every great piece of art you have produced deserves to be presented well. Carefully choosing a supporting colour for the mount, can really enhance the presentation of your image.  You will learn how to temporary mount your work ready for exhibition.

Week 14

What a wonderful way to conclude the current course by show casing your work to your friends and family. A true celebration of your achievements over the past three and a half months.
